‘Caught Reading’ Photograph Competition Entries

The ‘Caught Reading’ Photograph Competition is receiving some interesting entries. Some have a local influence with the Celtic Stones and the Excalibur Monument as a feature and others are inspired by their children, grandchildren or their favourite pet.

All the photographs are on display at the Library and the community can vote on their favourite as many times as they want. Prizes will be awarded to the community vote and the judges choice, so keep them coming.

This year the group have designed and painted a major art work for the Glen Innes Library Learning Centre, which has been completed in partnership with Glen Innes TAFE.

At an official unveiling of the artwork on Friday 5 May at Library, there was a gathering of Aboriginal elders and community members; Mosman and Glen Innes Severn Council management and staff, both Mosman and Glen Innes Mayors and their wives, the Consul General of Spain and his wife; TAFE management and staff; and Glen Innes Severn community members.

The art group dedicated the painting to reconciliation and peace between indigenous people and the Glen Innes community.

Red & Yellow Suitcase Tour / Youth Week Event

A combined Red & Yellow Suitcase Tour and Youth Week Event was attended by over 40 children on Thursday 19 April.

Participants were able to handle the historical artefacts from the Red & Yellow Suitcases and then make themselves a mask with plenty of paint and bling. This was followed by a pizza and wii games party in the Conference Room. From the feedback received and the facebook comments – it was a thumbs up event for the Library.

He’ll Be OK: Growing Gorgeous Boys Into Good Men

Celia Lashie Live at the Glen Innes Severn Public & TAFE Library on Tuesday 29 May at 6.30 pm.

Celia Lashie is a researcher and social commentator who has worked for 15 years within the Prison Service. She started in December 1985 as the first women to work as a prison officer in a male prison in New Zealand. Her final role within the Service was a manager of Christchurch Women’s Prison which she left in September 1999.

Celia has some challenging suggestions for parents and for women in particular to rethink the way they interact with the men in their lives – their sons and their husbands – if they want to see their sons become the good men they want them to be.

Celia Lashlie’s visit to Glen Innes is being hosted by the Glen Innes Community Drug Action Team and sponsored by the Glen Innes Severn Library.

Book Launch by Peter Ralph – ‘Dirty Fracking Business’

Peter Ralph launched his novel ‘Dirty Fracking Business’ at the Glen Innes Severn Library on Tuesday 3 April.   Peter was a CEO of a large private company that he took public in the early 90s before becoming a successful share and derivatives trader.   He moved to the country for peace and quiet and became embroiled in the battle of his life – Coal Seam Gas Mining.

Peter’s novel is about a six year old who passes away with a mysterious form of cancer, his father, Charles, swears to have his revenge.   The water and the air in the Fisher Valley was pristine before the coal seam gas companies arrived with government endorsed gas exploration and development licences.  Then they marched roughshod over the owners of privately owned highly productive farming and grazing land, paying them little in the way of compensation.

After drilling they pumped water, sand and toxic chemicals at high pressure hundreds of metres into the ground in a process known as fracking that exploded the coal seams, releasing the methane while giving scant attention to the ground, air and water pollution they were creating.

Charles Paxton is determined to stop the gas companies even if it means blowing up their wells and blocking their access to agricultural properties.  But big gas is powerful and backed by rapacious governments who won’t hesitate to use their police and army to smash through blockades.  Can a small group of farmers, greens and conservatives stand against the might of big gasand the governments complicit in helping it?

National Year of Reading Update

The National Year of Reading 2012 is an ambitious campaign to help turn Australia into a nation of readers. This may seem an easy task but there are several reports that show evidence of major literacy issues for Australia. The Australian Early Development Index (AEDI) Snapshot of Early Childhood Development in Australia (March 2010) which included results for the language and cognitive skills of nearly 250,000 five-year-olds indicates that a fifth of Australian five-year-olds (23%) were developmentally vulnerable or at risk of not achieving the necessary language and cognitive skills.

At the Glen Innes Severn Public & TAFE Library we have been supporting the development of reading skills and the practice of reading to children for many years. Some of these projects and services include:

* Friends of the Library Newborn Baby Project – newborns at the Glen Innes Hospital receive a first reader and a homemade cloth library bag.

*Regular Storytelling Sessions at the Library and at Offsite locations

*Free copies of our Raising Readers booklet

*Summer Reading Programs and activities over the school holidays to encourage young people to continue to read over the long holiday periods

*Supporting the National Year of Reading with several projects – such as the photographic competition ‘Caught Reading’.

February 20, 2012

I was about 11 years old when reading finally ‘clicked’ for me. My Latin teacher (that’s right, Latin – I’m THAT old) gave me a copy of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ – an oblong slab of dead tree 1065 pages long. I felt I had to give it a go, it being given to me by a teacher and all – so I started into it… and within a few pages something happened: I began to see what I was reading. As I turned the pages the view just kept getting wider and wider. These days cinema screens are bigger and better than ever, but the truth is the screen inside your head is a million miles wide – and the hi-def is to die for – Graeme Base ( National Ambassor )

The Glen Innes Severn Public Library will be hosting several activities for National Year of Reading (NYR) 2012. Check out these coming events on our calendar:
*February- December  - Wear RED Wednesdays
*March – Caught Reading Photographic Competition
*July – E-readers Launch
*September – Father & Childrens Storytelling Corner on Saturdays

Last Harry Potter movie

Have you read all of the Harry Potter books? Or, have you watched all the movies? OR, have you done both? I haven’t seen the latest and last movie yet but am really looking forward to it! I saw part one on a MASSIVE screen in Charlestown square in Newcastle last year and loved it! But, I remember sitting next to my sister & saying to her, I know where they’re going to stop it & I WAS RIGHT!

I have read all the books and have enjoyed them and the movies and have thoroughly enjoyed watching the actors in the movies grow and improve and embrace the characters. I can’t read the books now without hearing Emma Watson’s Hermoine’s voice in my head.
